Innovative Experiences between Libraries from Colombia, Peru and Uruguay

As a strategy to expand support to public libraries in Latin America, MAKAIA has received funding through the United Nations South-South Cooperation Fund (Fondo Pérez Guerrero). This due to the presentation of a proposal to carry out several activities in 2017 to promote collaboration, use of technology, library services, alliance and training. The libraries that will be benefited are the Digital Inclusion Spaces in Uruguay, the libraries of the National Library Network in Peru and the Libraries Network of Medellín in Colombia.

As Colombia has not presented itself for many years to obtain funding from the PGTF, MAKAIA is a pioneer in the implementation of these resources in our country, combining the efforts of the Libraries Network of Medellín, the National Library of Peru and ANTEL in Uruguay. Therefore, we involve the governmental international cooperation agencies. The Colombian International Cooperation Agency (APC) and the Uruguayan and Peruvian governments (APCI) have announced their interest and support for the project.

These funds will allow us to continue implementing the methodologies and philosophy of Beyond Access in Colombia, Peru and Uruguay. Likewise, it is essential at this stage to strengthen alliances in the region aiming for communities of librarians capable of sharing their experiences of success in the development of services that incorporate ICT in public libraries.

Some of the activities planned for this project are:

  • Defend and promote libraries as the axis of development in Colombia, Peru and Uruguay
  • Implement innovative services using ICT in libraries
  • Sharing experiences and success stories among librarians
  • Strengthen the skills of librarians in ICT adoption

The Perez-Guerrero Trust Fund for South-South Cooperation (PGTF) was established by the United Nations in accordance with General Assembly resolution 38/201 of 20 December 1983, which provides the liquidation of the United Nations Emergency Operations Trust Fund and the allocation of its remaining balance.

The PGTF is a fund created to support activities of economic and technical cooperation among developing countries (ECDC / TCDC) of critical importance for the developing countries members of the Group of 77, with The aim of achieving national or collective self-sufficiency according to the priorities set by them. It was named in honor of the late Manuel Pérez-Guerrero and its funds are channeled through the United Nations Development Program following the approval of the Group of 77.

Experiencias innovadoras

In the month of July, were held activities of exchange of experiences between librarians of the city of Medellín and librarians in Uruguay. In addition to this, we were in Peru, at the Great Public Library of Lima, in a three-day training session for public libraries and coordinating centers at the national level. The topics related to this training were the role of technology in libraries, software donations for libraries, the modern vision of the library, the role of the innovative librarian, online training services, user-based design, among others. Virtual library exchanges were carried out periodically between the three countries.
